I am trying to sync the calendar to 2 different computers.
We have Thunderbird installed on both and the login/account is the same, missing calendar entries. I click the sync but nothing happens

The thing is, the email that you both see is actually on the mail server.
As Matt pointed out, the same thing needs to happen for the calendar, it needs to be a calendar that is hosted in some kind of server (cloud). Most providers usually support CalDAV, and you need to have a URL in the location property of your calendar.
What type of mail server are you using, Google, Outlook, Yahoo?

sync is for cloud calendars, like google, yahoo etc.
Do you have a cloud calendar to sync?
What type of Calendar does your mail provider has, CalDAV? What do you have on the "location" entry for the Calendar properties? (Right-click on the calendar > Properties)

but if I make a calendar entry on one computer shouldn't it show on the second computer, the mail appears on multiple products
The calendar is Thunderbird's Calendar. It is the same email account, both calendars do not share the info. If My husband and I are on two separate computers working, we are able to see the email and if I delete an email it deletes on both, but if I enter an event or task on Thunderbird's Calendar which is attached to my email on my computer and it does not show on his computer.
