"Firefox can't update to the latest version" appears after updating.

It appears that the update service for Firefox (and possibly Thunderbird) is broken, as I get a pop-up stating "Firefox can't update to the latest version" every time I launch and every couple of hours.

I have uninstalled Firefox, installed with a new profile (moved original elsewhere), and tried it all over again after removing Firefox, ThunderBird and the Mozilla Update Service through Revo Uninstall. Doesn't appear to work.

Somehow the update service just can't fetch update information and keeps showing that message.

Any advice is appreciated.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

I've opened Firefox in Safe Mode in the morning and left it open. I came back after work and the message still appeared.

This is already running under the local administrator account.

There is a difference between using a Windows administrator account and running a program as administrator, so you can still try this.

As suggested, I launched firefox.exe via the "run as administrator" and left it open overnight. It is still prompting me to download a fresh copy.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

I've completed the clean installation of Firefox (64-bit) for Windows as described above, deleting the Firefox and Mozilla Update Sevice folders while keeping the profile folder. After a few hours the message has re-appeared again.

The string has not been deleted, why would it on a clean install?

I should have worded it better. I'm saying, if you were to delete it, would that fix the problem?

A while back, when I couldn't get my FF to pop-up saying a new version is available, I deleted that URL in About:Config and it worked shortly thereafter. Maybe it was a coincidence.

Welp, none of this seems to be working.

I've found my issue in my DNS tables rules. Seems I added aus5.mozilla.org along side an extensive list of know telemetry URLs.

Clearing the update pref probably won't work because Firefox uses an API to retrieve the update data.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.
