Getting fed up Firefox randomly doing this (others have had this happen too) - for no obvious reason the saved logins and passwords section in Options is completely wiped. I love Firefox but this problem is making me want to move to another browser sadly. Bank log-ins, etc all gone...AGAIN.

First off did you check your privacy settings to see what it has checked marked for saved logins? I use it and have no issues.

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

Firefox uses the logins.json (passwords) and key4.db (key file) in the profile folder to store the passwords.

You can look at this utility to browse System Restore points to see if you can locate a shadow copy of these two files..

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

It is possible that there has been a problem with the profiles.ini file that registers profiles and that a new default profile got created.

You can check if you have an orphaned profile that isn't registered in profiles.ini and that doesn't show in the Firefox Profile Manager. You can check that by opening the current profile folder via the about:profiles page and go up one level (..) to see if there are unlisted profiles present.

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

If you have found an orphaned profile then you may want to recover some personal data or restore his profile.

You can recover an orphaned profile via these steps:

See "Profile was moved or renamed":

Note that you should never use "Choose Folder" to specify a folder that already contains files that do not belong to Firefox. Only use "Choose Folder" to recover an profile that isn't listed in the Profile Manager.

Thanks very much cor-el. I'll look into it.

I've checked the older logins.json files and they are listed as corrupt. Is there a way of getting them back? Also, why does Firefox end up corrupting them?
