All my bookmarks including auto backups have vanished. How might I get them back?

more options

Firefox did an update last night and loging in this morning all my bookmarks have disappeared. "Ok, don't panic" I tell myself," go online and find a solution". That is all fine except the only profile folder/file I can find is today's. No auto backups in sight. Nothing.

Any ideas please?

Sometimes, during an update, the profile gets refreshed.

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

Firefox automatically makes backups of the bookmarks. These are stored in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Are you saying the folder is not there?

Open the profiles folder. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Navigating_to_the_profile_folder

How many profiles are listed? How many should be there?

Thanks but ... There is no new folder anywhere marked "Old Firefox". The only backup file is todays with no bookmarks at all.

Not at all happy with this occurance.

Did you open the profiles folder?

Hi twilko69, sometimes files get locked during an update. To rule that out, could you shut down and restart Windows 7?

If that doesn't improve things, you mentioned:

Does that mean when you check the following location (paste into the Windows 7 Start menu Search box and press Enter to load) you only see one profile folder in here:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Note: That should expand to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles which is a hidden folder. To set Windows to show hidden folders, see: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

See my previous post.

I have also discovered that the whole is worse than I thought. All my preferences and Add-ons have gone bye-bye as well. Bother!

Do you make backups?

Another possibility would be that during a recent system update, Windows 7 created a restore point containing a snapshot of your Firefox profile folder. Don't use system restore! That typically causes more problems. I'm aware of two programs you can use to export files from restore points. Here's the rundown:

(1) Set Windows to show hidden files and folders:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

(2) Download and run one of these programs:

Within the most recent restore point shown in the program, you can explore along this path to see whether you can find a timely shadow copy of your profile:

\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

(3) Export a full copy of your old folder if possible, for example, to your currently live desktop (not the desktop inside the restore point). Otherwise, rescue individual files based on your priorities.

Did you find anything promising for possible restoration?
