When I scroll down to find old emails, I can't because the scrolling won't go beyond a certain date: why is this?

When I want to retrieve e mails from earlier in the year - six months ago, say - I can't because the software will only let me scroll down to a very recent date which is usually the end of the current month and a bit of the month before. As I'm a journalist who needs to refer back to old emails/documents, this is infuriating. Why are my old emails not available in my in box? Thank you.

In the mean time, while you're still waiting to be moved to the Thunderbird support forum, and just in case you use Yahoo email, would you please take a look at this :
