When upgrading from 56 to 62 my saved logins and passwords disappeared and copying the files did not help; how can I get them back?

I have just recently moved from Firefox 56 up to 62 (I had a few Legacy add-ons that I didn't want to loose, so I just stopped upgrading at 56; now, I need to upgrade and found a work-around for the main add-ons that I loose in 62). However, once I upgraded to 62, all of my saved log-ins and passwords were gone. I tried copying the files from my saved profile but that did not fix the problem. However, the passwords are still there, as when I downgrade back to 56, all the passwords come back. Is there any way to get these passwords back or do I have to reenter them all manually?

Hi Hyldreth, at some point, I can't remember when, the pair of files used for passwords changed from

  • logins.json + key3.db

to

  • logins.json + key4.db

When copying in old files to try to have Firefox use/reconvert them, please copy all of the files you find, so if your old files are

  • logins.json + key3.db

without any sign of key4.db in the old profile, then copy those over and REMOVE the new key4.db file so Firefox will look for key3.db.

On the other hand, if your old files are either

  • logins.json + key3.db + key4.db
  • logins.json + key4.db

Then just copy those over to your currently live profile.

Note #1: all changes to your profile folder should be done after Firefox shuts down and finishes updating and releases locks on the files.

Note #2: key4.db also is used somehow for the certificate store (cert9.db), so if you had to set up Firefox to work with a "man in the middle" such as Avast, AVG, Bitdefener, ESET, or Kaspersky, you might have to do that again.

Hi jscher2000, thanks for your response. Unfortunately, I've already tried copying all of those files from my saved profile (which was the 56 profile) into the new 62 profile, and still have no joy.

I actually tried several different combinations, once copying key4 and logins.json, once copying key3 and logins.json, and once copying both key3 and key4 with lognins.json. None of those attempts helped.

Any other thoughts? Is there maybe a way to import logins and passwords from a file?
