If helper isn't a FF created software you will have to read the FAQ from the site where you got the software "helper" from.

it's an FF created software. that's why i'm baffled!

Helper is used during the uninstall process. It may have other functions but not heard of any.

How did you install this ? It should install while installing Firefox itself. Are you getting the install file from here : https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ ? Passwords are not in the main program files of Firefox but in your Profile logins.json (passwords) and key4.db (58+) or key3.db (57 and older) (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager.

You can't be talking about 'Application Update Service Helper' - are you talking about an add-on  ? If so, could you let us know which one, as there are many with the word 'Helper' in the title.

So you are talking about the Application Update Service Helper'.

Would you please answer Pkshadow's question :

I'm not sure why you are doing that. just install Firefox. Download it from www.getfirefox.com, you don't have to install that add-on.

i installed it because it popped up as something "recommended" when i opened firefox today. thanks!

And you are absolutely sure that this 'recommendation' was about the Application Update Service Helper' and not something else  ? It will probably not be possible to provide a screenshot of this pop-up  ?

And 'you're out of date' means that your system details show that you are running an older version of Firefox - the latest version is 61.0.2, which you can download (in your preferred language) from here :

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

The Application Update Service Helper is a built-in extension, which you do not have to install yourself and it definately will not ask you for your password - I may be overly suspicious, but I want to rule out that you're dealing with malware.

However keep in mind that the current ESR is 60.1.0 ESR and the useragent shows as if you have Firefox 60.0 Release. So if the OP is using 60.0 ESR then it is not outdated.

thanks for all the help. i just hit cancel when it asked for my password. so i guess the helper isn't "helping", but at least i don't have to put in my password every time!

Now I'm even more curious as to where/how you are (or I say should were ) asked to enter your password ....

Also : when you go to Preferences => Add-ons => Extensions :

is the 'Application Update Service Helper' listed there  ?
