I'm having a new issue with my bookmarks tool bar.
Since I upgraded to Firefox 52 and with each upgrade since, all of the toolbar bookmark buttons are now enclosed in a white box. I have no idea what I did to create this nor how to fix it. Thank you for your time on this.

Hi, please try a Refresh but Note that this does more than uninstalling and re-installing does. Normal uninstalling does not remove some preferences which may have become corrupt. Please Refresh but do this 1st: Delete your Cookies and Cache and TEST.

Firefox 55 could be running legacy extensions that modify the toolbar area. For example, are you using Classic Theme Restorer or another extension to modify your toolbar buttons to icon+text? I suggest going through all their various settings related to the Bookmarks Toolbar to see whether you can find a conflict that prevents your theme from being applied to that area.
And of course, old versions are not secure. Mozilla discloses security flaws after each new release. What's holding you back from upgrading to Firefox 61?
Note that Firefox 52.9.0 ESR is more secure than Firefox 55.
