why would firefox all of a sudden block a website I've used for years?

I've been using hushmail.com for years. All of a sudden, just now, firefox is saying its insecure:

"secure.hushmail.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown. The server might not be sending the appropriate intermediate certificates. An additional root certificate may need to be imported. Error code: SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER "

I easily accessed hushmail in safari. I'm signed in right now.

Any issues with me making an exception?

Just rec'd a response from hushmail:

"Hello, We've recently made a change to our system which will impact how you access your Hushmail account.

Going forward, when you access Hushmail you will see the URL https://secure.hushmail.com in your browser, rather than https://www.hushmail.com.

For more information on ensuring you're connecting to Hushmail safely, please see this Help article.

Please note that if your sign-in information is saved in your web browser, this may not automatically fill in on our new sign-in page. However, most browsers will allow you to retrieve and view saved passwords. Instructions for major browsers can be found below: Google Chrome Mozilla Firefox Safari Microsoft Edge/IE"

I checked and the new address is now showing up in the address bar.

So it looks like the problem was on their end and its solved.

Thank you all so much for your help!!!! :-)

There is security software like Avast, Kaspersky, BitDefender and ESET that intercept secure connections and send their own certificate.

This might be an issue with "Certificate issued by a authority belonging to Symantec".

Try to rename the cert9.db (cert9.db.old) and cert8.db files (cert8.db.old) in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed to remove intermediate certificates and exceptions that Firefox has stored.

If that has helped to solve the problem then you can remove the renamed cert8.db.old file.

Firefox will store intermediate certificates that a server sends in the Certificate Manager for future use.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Hmm, when I test here:

https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=secure.hushmail.com

There are two different certificate paths, one is complete and the other is incomplete. I wonder if that could be an issue?

Thanks FredMcD. I cleared cookies and it let me on to the site. The weird thing is that it wouldn't auto-fill the email info which is saved in my preferences. So I typed it in and it asked me if I wanted ff to remember. I clicked yes and it opened the email w/no problem. However it was extremely slow and now I have duplicates of the email info in preferences.

Any idea what would cause that?

I don't know.

Thank you cor-el and jscher. We must have been typing at the same time.

I started w/the first article and didn't understand all the technical stuff. I tested again and was able to sign in and out. Its very slow responding. I have two emails with them. I was able to sign into both of the the first time and one of them the second time. When I try to sign in to the other one I'm getting this error message:

"Problem loading page Report this"

Just tried again on safari and I have been able to sign in & out of both emails.

jscher, I just emailed that link to hushmail.

I guess its on to the next article.

Does Firefox lag when signing in for you? Does it say this webpage may be slowing down Firefox?

It was very slow. But just on the hushmail website. It doesn't say this webpage may be slowing down firefox.

Update: This morning I was able to sign in using ff. I signed out and tried to sign back in again. Got the same message: "Problem loading page Report this" again. After a few seconds it signed in. IDK, this now seems like its more of a hushmail issue.

I will mark your above reply as the solution since you write that the issue is solved. A certificate check shows that there are no certificate chain issues, so the website should work without problems.

Note that you can double-click the username and password entries in the Password Manager to edit these fields, but that shouldn't be necessary because Firefox will offer to store the name and password for the new page. You can remove passwords saved for the old domain if present and only leave the entry for secure.hushmail.com.

Thank you cor-el. I just now rec'd another email from hushmail that said: " Those problems yesterday were due to us updating out login page and they have been fixed now."

So far today, the email/password autofill is working great.
