Hi I seem to have acquired a number of duplicate bookmarks, (3 sets! Happened around the time Firefox updated itself) and saved new bookmarks in differing copies - don't ask!

Can I load these bookmarks into an Open Office app to edit them all and then re-instal them? Many thanks.

This is for FF help not for Open Office support. This is best direct to Open Office support. And how did you install FF to start to cause this? If your not willing to give some background how would you expect others to know what is going on to help?

Hi Thanks for your interest.

Regrettably, as I mentioned I have no idea how this occurred.

I would not regards this as an OpenOffice support question, more a question of how to edit a large number of Firefox bookmarks. Therefor the initial problem is with Firefox.

If there is a Firefox solution - that would be great but I cannot find such a solution in my Mozilla support searches. Hence, I figured that to load them into another application to edit them and then re-load into Firefox an easier solution.

Be glad to hear from anyone with a constructive solution.

Can't you remove the duplicates in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)?

If this happened recently then you can check if you have a JSON backup that you can restore.

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

You can export the bookmarks to an HTML file and edit this file in your office editor.

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup

Then you can re-import this file in Firefox. Note that you need to remove all the existing bookmarks before importing the edited HTML backup because importing an HTML backup merges the bookmarks.

Are you using Sync? If so, those 3 sets of duplicate bookmarks could have been caused by Sync, especially if you have a Mobile version of Firefox (Firefox for Android or Firefox for iOS) connected on that Sync account. "We" have seen quite a number of problems with duplicated bookmarks that are related to Sync on "Mobile" and "Desktop" for close to two years now (seems to have started around April / May 2015. And Sync will corrupt the Places file in desktop / laptop Firefox installations.

Whatever the cause, Sync or not - - IMO, before spending a lot of time manually removing those duplicates you should use the Verify Integrity feature on the Places Database, takes just a few minutes to run, as explained below.

Open Help > Troubleshooting Information and scroll all the way down to Places Database and use the Verify Integrity button there.
