Firefox does not open

My Firefox suddenly stopped opening. I open it, icon appears in dock and immediately disappears. I did a fresh install of 57.0.4 and still the same. It's not already running (checked activity monitor).

PC: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) OS: macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 (17C205)

In /Library/Application Support/Firefox/Crash Reports there are two files: InstallTime20171226083017 InstallTime20180103231032

Hey FredMcD, thanks. I have mentioned my Firefox and system info in the question. I'm not running any Internet security program and my firewall is off.

There is a lot of malware out there which makes your lack protection very dangerous.


Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?


Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP- in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most recent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box and paste them in.

I tried holding Option key and starting Firefox, same result. Restarted my Mac in safe mode and no luck.

I tried running this in the terminal:

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -safe-mode

It says: The patch directory path is not valid for this application (/Users/arjunu./Library/Caches/Mozilla/updates/Applications/Firefox/updates/0)

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Just something to think about;

Install Older Version Of Firefox {web link} Be sure to read everything here.

If you still want to downgrade, look under; I still want to downgrade. Click the Directory of other versions and languages link. Look for the directory of the version that you want. But, remember that old versions may have security issues.

You should also check out Firefox; Extended Support Release {web link} ESR Notes System Requirements


First, Type about:preferences#advanced<enter> in the address bar. Under Advanced, Select Update.

[v56+] Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar. Select Update.

Select Never Check For Updates.

Also turn off Use a background service to install updates <Windows Only>

I installed 56.0.2 It worked. I was able to browser. Then I tried updating. It said restart to install update. I did that and same issue. Now I clean installed 56.0.2 again and same issue

This is interesting:

I opened the dmg file for 57.0.4 and did not move it to Applications directory. Instead I double clicked and opened it. And it worked!

Tried moving it to other directories and it doesn't work. Only when I directly open it from the mounted dmg it works.
