Firefox 57 -- Making bookmarks as confusing as humanly possible

With Firefox 57 now happily on three machines, I noticed all the silly bookmark and history menu changes, menus within menus, menu lefts, and menu rights, all of which were and are generally quite confusing and inefficient. Then as with other universal mysteries in what software developers see as logical in their confused definitions of process efficiency or extremely bored "Let's add this unnecessary step" minds, I told myself to forget about the dysfunctionality.

However on one device, I decided I wanted to import about twenty bookmarks from an html file (a file format now associated with Firefox by the way).

I had to go to Firefox help pages to figure out where the import function was buried and hidden, because gods forbid making the function readily visible in a bookmark dropdown menu, like it has been historically on popular browsers. We can't have that ... too easy.

So I found the import function, did the import, and there was no change to the bookmarks library in any clicked-on folder or area. None. I clicked here and there, and the "imported" bookmarks were nowhere to be found. So I tried again given zero Firefox indications of success. And tried once more.

Ready to give up, I later noticed there were triplicate copies of the bookmarks in the dropdown of a dropdown (because the gods know we can't just have one bookmarks dropdown menu ... that would be simple and straightforward with fewer clicks ... and fewer clicks are an anathema to software developers in the 21st century). And this list of triplicate imported bookmarks appeared to be incomplete, with only about ten showing and no indication that I could scroll down within the menu to see more.

So then I was stuck with this weird here-not-there, some-not-all, triplicate bookmarks thing, and I just wanted to delete the whole mess.

No way to do it. No right-click options where the bookmarks were visible. And they weren't visible anywhere in the library, so I couldn't do anything there.

I stumbled onto a feature that allowed me to revert to old bookmarks (in this case the generic Firefox install bookmarks), and it seems to have taken me back to a clean slate.

I will not touch bookmarks again, unless months from now Mozilla decides to make things easier and functional, as opposed to confusing and dysfunctional. And I will simply keep track of past and future links of interest in separate text files on my pc's ... much, much easier than Mozilla's current debacle.

As for the bookmarks I wanted to import and manipulate, I will simply open their html file in the future and search on the bookmark titles as needed.

What a frickin mess.

Hi,

Heres how to make bookmarks a one click action:

  1. Click on the Library 57 library icon icon on your Firefox toolbar.
  2. Click on Bookmarks, then click on Bookmarking Tools.
  3. Click on Add Bookmarks Menu to the Toolbar.
    • A Bookmarks Menu Bookmark Menu icon (star on tray) icon will be added to your toolbar.
  4. Click on the new Bookmarks Menu icon. You should get the same Bookmarks Menu as in earlier Firefox versions.

Let us know if this solves the problem.

Thank you for the reply.

If it's possible to narrow down the present Firefox bookmarks debacle into one point, it's that management and manipulation of bookmarks is quite confusing and sometimes impossible, at least without a lot of research, for what should be straightforward functionality with no research required for experienced computer users.

Your comment, a feature that I stumbled across in this morning's experience described above, is helpful, but does not address the wholly unnecessary confusion in managing and manipulating bookmarks in Firefox 57.

Thanks again.

IMO, the problem is the result of analog users in a digital world.

So in the digital world process efficiency is defined by making previous processes longer and previous functions more difficult to find?

Something which, by the way, the initial reply to my post supports.

Could Firefox Quantum 57.02 still be in Beta ? I cant believe they would release such a buggy product mainstream. How can you take a web browser seriously that cant even remember bookmarks ? I did a complete hard drive wipe and reinstalled Windows, and Firefox still looses all my bookmarks after just a few minutes. I`m not loosing any sleep over this, just use other browsers, Edge, Chrome.. If Mozilla cant even make a browser that can do bookmarks LOL... I also deleted my user profile and created a new one, same thing.. Like I said, this should still be in beta testing.
