I innitially thought that this was due to problems with the places directory, so i forced the creation of a new one (as detailed here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding#w_create-a-new-places-database)

Unfortunately as they are hangs rather than crashes I don't have crash reports or equivalent. Does anyone have any idea how i can fix this?

When does this happen? When you start Firefox? As the browser is loading? When it loads your homepage?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Typically within the first 20 minutes of me using Firefox. Generally, I have YouTube, Facebook and emails opens. I've now updated to Firefox quantum - and the same thing happens, and I've also tried using chrome. Weirdly the same thing happens.

I had this mornings crash at 5 am when i was working on some late night emails. I'll try starting it tomorrow in safemode

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP- in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most recent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box and paste them in.

Do you have any (cleanup) software on your computer that is scheduled to run during the night and that might check files in the Firefox profile folder?

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

(i think the ones at the bottom are the more recent, because i submitted them in the order they on my screen - newest to oldest)

These don't include many of the hangs I've had (so far I had one this morning)- so I am not sure if they will be helpful

I have been running in safe mode, largely hang free.

(I've had one hang whilst in safe mode, but that may have been caused outside firefox, by Latex processing a big document)

my add ons are: ADB helper Grammarly for Firefox, IBM Security Rapport and McAfee WebAdvisor

Update Video Card Drivers See if you can find updates for your Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500 as they are several yrs old : driverDate: 11-11-2014 You can Google Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500 and find the download page https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/86210/Intel-HD-Graphics-5500, but you may have to know what generation chipset you are using. CPU-Z would tell you this https://www.cpuid.com/ Can also try : https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html I see several errors in the drivers.
