Hi   ! Java does no longer work on the release version of Firefox and doesn't work on browsers like Chrome or Opera either (and it was never supported on Microsoft's Edge). The Extended Support Release (ESR) of Firefox 52 will still run Java and other old plugins. ESR was first developed to meet the needs of large organizations that wanted Firefox to change much more slowly. It gets security updates but no feature changes for about a year at a time.

Note that website need to make the change to Java Web Start to be able to use Java in a web browser. Plugins other than Flash will no longer work in any current browser and Flash will stop being supported as well.

A Java Web Start JNLP file is basically a XML file that the server sends as application/x-java-jnlp-file and that is opened by the default application for this MIME type (Java Web Start). Java then handles everything on its own, but there is no longer embedding possible like a plugin offers. Java registers this MIME type when you install the Java program.

Other web browsers have dropped support of NPAPI Plugins which includes Java as Chrome/Chromium and Opera did back in 2015.

Besides even Oracle is in process of dropping their Java Plugin as Java 9 will not have it. Java 8 is still supported for now though last update was July 26, 2017.

Not a matter of what needs correcting in Firefox but what is changing outside of web browsers.

Only support for the Java plugin and the Java applet in a browser window is dropped, so you can no longer embed Java in a web page. Instead you need to use Java Web Start (jnlp: Java Network Launch Protocol) to launch a Java application in a standalone Java window. Websites that want to use Java need to adapt and make the change to this way to launch a Java application.

I am delighted that Java is almost dead. Unfortunately i clicked on the "I have this problem too" at the top of this list without realising it sent a message in support of Robert's view, which was quite the opposite of my intention.
