The recent reviews mention that the extension is incompatible with multiprocess Firefox. You could try disabling multiprocess to see whether that makes any difference. Here's how:

Are you using Multiprocess (e10s)?

Multiprocess creates a second firefox.exe or plugin-container.exe process to isolate the web content from the browser UI. In Firefox 54 and later, you may see four content processes. You can check whether you have this feature turned on as follows. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the first table on the page, check the row for "Multiprocess Windows" and see whether the number on the left side of the fraction is greater than zero. If so, you are using e10s.

If you are using e10s:

To help evaluate whether that feature is causing problems, you could turn it off as follows:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste autos and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 preference to switch the value from true to false

Note: the exact name of the preference may vary, but it will start with browser.tabs.remote.autostart

At your next Firefox startup, it should run in the traditional way. Any difference?

Another possibility would be to use the built-in "keyword" feature of bookmarks. If you type the keyword in the address bar and press Enter, Firefox will load that bookmark. Worth a try? Here's how to set it up:

Once a site is bookmarked, you can right-click the bookmark and click Properties. This gives you a multi-line dialog where one of the fields is keyword. For example, let's say you want to set fb as the keyword for Facebook. You type fb in the keyword field and click Save.

To use the keyword, you can position the cursor in the address bar (all the existing text will be selected so that typing the keyword will replace it) using one of these:

  • Ctrl+L
  • the F6 function key
  • Alt+D

Alternately, if you prefer to load the page in a new tab, launch a new tab using

  • Ctrl+t

Then type the keyword and press Enter to load it in the currently displayed tab.

Keywords can be as short as one character, or (I think) as long as you need. So g or goo could work for Google.

I looked at the add-ons page. Looks like https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/sitelauncher/ has many complaints.

Note: v55 has been giving users problems. Reinstall v54.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox?cache=no Be sure to read everything here.

If you still want to downgrade, look under; I still want to downgrade. Click the Directory of other versions and languages link. Look for the directory of the version that you want. But, remember that old versions may have security issues.

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename/remove the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in current Firefox releases.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
