How do I debug an intermittent failure to send?

I'm running Thunderbird 52.2 on Debian buster (1:52.2.1-4).

About once every day or two, I try to send a message. I click send and immediately the send box greys out, but there is no other feedback and the message doesn't send.

If I click Save - I also get no feedback. The message is still open.

If I click the X to close the window, I'm told that the message has not been sent and I am asked if I want to save it.

If I click save, I'm returned to the open message and get no other error messages.

If I close the message without sending and then close Thunderbird, the user interface goes away, as if it was closed.

However, it still shows up in my process list.

If I wait several minutes I eventually get a message about how Thunderbird crashed, but usually I just kill the process.

When I start Thunderbird again, everything works as expected (for a day or so).

The only add-on I have installed is Enigmail (however, this problem happens even if I send to someone without a key and/or if I send a message and uncheck the encrypt and sign options).

I haven't tried running Thunderbird without engimail because then I can't really use my email.

Any other tips on how to debug?

After writing this question - I discovered that there was an enigmail update available. I've installed the update and so far no repetition of the problem. Fingers crossed that this is the end of it.

I have marked your comment as a solution. If not solved just post here again in the next month or so, but it sounds like an add-on issue to me. The send process is as I understand it (poorly) is complex and poorly understood. If Thunderbird developers have commented like that, my guess is the enigmail folks are not doing any better with it.
