There was a time when Thunderbird had add-ons to do this.

That worked.

And, thank you so much for posting the directions for over-riding the default TB incompatibility behavior which had prevented it from being used.

Sorry, but that add-on is not compatible with the current version of TB (52.4.0), which is why the problem exists, and why the question is asked.

Rather than have an add-on provide correct functionality, it seems to me that TB should behave correctly to begin with. By correctly I do imply that hiding the author of a message is invalid and unhelpful behavior.
