Can I open new message as tab rather than window?
I would like Thunderbird to not open new windows but rather only open new tabs. Is there a way to do that within the program or with an add-on?

The new message Compose is always a new window. You failed to mention that detail in your question.

It seems like what you suggest should do what I want but it does not. Clicking on Write to create a new message opens a new window, not a tab.
Other thoughts?

I specified new messages in the title but the question is also more generic since I don't know if compose is the only action that automatically opens a new window.
As an alternative, is there by chance any way to convert a window to a tab? It sounds like there is not but thought I would ask.
