I received a message that my computer was running slow and to refresh Firefox. It took a LONG time for it to do this and now it isn't working at all. I get a message that it doesn't recognize my information. I've uninstalled it and tried downloading but still get the same message! What do I do?!

Refreshing Firefox -- easily fix most problems

If you're having problems with Firefox, refreshing it can help. The refresh feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks and open tabs. Everything else, like user settings and add-ons, are removed.

Windows 10 and I can't access Firefox anymore so I don't know what version; it's no longer on my computer.

Here's the message: Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible.

This message displays even after I tried downloading Firefox.

After I did the 'refresh', a file folder titled "Old Firefox Data" was placed on my desk top but it's a read only file and I haven't been able to open or restore it.

Okay, let's start with this;

Let’s do a full clean re-install; Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do Not remove the profiles folder.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox program folders by adding .old to them. Do not rename the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

This is a problem with the profiles.ini file that stores data about registered profiles.

There can also be a problem with permissions/ownership of involved folders/files preventing access. Locate the profiles.ini file and delete this file or use the Profile Manager to create a new profile.

See:

You can delete the profiles.ini file to make Firefox create a new (default) profile or you can recover an orphaned profile via these steps:

  • use the Profile Manager to create a new profile
  • click "Choose Folder" in the Profile Manager
  • browse to the location of a lost profile to recover this profile and register it in the Profile Manager

Note that you should never use "Choose Folder" to specify a folder that already contains files that do not belong to Firefox (i.e only use "Choose Folder" to recover an orphaned profile)

You can find the profiles.ini file in this hidden location:

  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\
  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
  • Linux: ~/.mozilla/firefox/

If clearing the profiles.ini file isn't working then also check the location of the cache files.

  • Windows: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • Mac: ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/
  • Linux:~/.cache/mozilla/firefox/

You can also try to rename/delete the Mozilla\Firefox\ folder in both above mentioned locations (main, cache).

cor-el : Thank you. This is all overwhelming to me as I have limited experience with this kind of thing. I've looked at the information, didn't see the file, so I will have to come back to it this next week. I may just use another browser because I already have too much on my plate.
