Using Thunderbird 52.01 - Lightning Add On not compatible. How to solve?

Using latest version of Thunderbird (52.01) on Windows 10. Tried to download the Lightening Add On via Thunderbird and directly from Mozilla, but this was flagged as not compatible with this version of Thunderbird and the Add On could not be downloaded.

How can I get the Lightning functionality and features into this version of Thunderbird?

Thunderbird ships with the Lightning add-on. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/thunderbird-calendar-integration

So there shouldn't be any need to manually install Lightning. Why would you want to do that?
