Sync removes customisation

I have been using the original Firefox sync for many years. A few months ago an upgrade caused my Firefox to loose all my customisation and revert to the default layout on both my PC and laptop. I was able to restore it as I had a backup copy of my Users/roaming Firefox profile, but it only worked if I deleted the profile in C:\Users\SS\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles first. But every time I try to use sync on either PC or Laptop now, the same thing happens - it reverts to the default look and settings. I have been waiting and watching if anyone else reports the same problem and there is a fix, but I haven't seen anything. I'd like to get my sync working again the way it should. Hope you can assist.

If Sync keeps restoring old or incorrect settings, change the Firefox Account Password to clear the corrupt data from the Sync server.

I log in through Google and don't really wish to change the password, but I appreciate the reply. Thank you.

Actually, you gave me the idea to create a new account in Firefox instead of logging in through Google and so far this seems to have worked in not changing my laptop settings. Tomorrow at the office I'll log in from my PC and fingers crossed it will sync with my laptop again and retain my settings. Thanks for the great idea.
