After upgrading to Thunderbird 45.2 on Ubuntu, my addressbook contents disappeared. Why?

I have tried saving a copy and renaming the abook-1.mab, abook-2.mab, etc. files simply to see if they were older copies. Still nothing shows in the address book, including Personal, Collected, and Group addresses.

I have an backup .ldif file to import, but am reticent to use it as it is older; I'd lose some more recent changes.

Also, no new addresses are being added via incoming mail to the blank address book that shows.
