Stop automatic update from installing
I unknowingly had my Firefox settings set to "Automatic Update" and today I got a pop up on my Macbook saying a security update has been downloaded and is ready to install. It will install the next time Firefox is restarted.
I DO NOT WANT THIS UPDATE! Firefox decided that it was a great idea to remove the ability to manually control cookies, which is the only reason I use Firefox instead of other browsers, so I definitely do not want to upgrade to the 44.02 version.
Can someone please tell me how to stop this update from installing the next time I reboot my Mac or close Firefox? If I can't stay on the older version and prevent this update, there is no way I will use Firefox ever again until they decide to add back manual cookie control (Ask me every time).

The update settings can be found in the Preferences > Advanced panel. But I guess once the update has been downloaded, it's too late to change them. But, you can download a install an older version again as described here and disable the updates afterwards.
But maybe you some of these cookies add-ons will provide the functionality you want in newer Firefox version too.

Disabling auto updates is easy to do via the Update Tab in Firefox preferences, this article will offer you insight on the different options : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/advanced-panel-settings-in-firefox#w_update-tab
Do take note : Not having the most recent version will however expose you to security vulnerabilities and is greatly inadvisable. However if you are sure you want to do that, here are the steps :
- Click the menu button and choose Preferences.
- Select the Advanced panel.
- Select the Update tab.
- Check Never check for updates .
Thanks for the replies. I know how to turn off the updates for the future, but since this one is already set to download and install, I'd prefer to block it from installing the next time I close Firefox and not having to uninstall/reinstall. There has to be a way from preventing the update right? Myself (and many others) are really disappointed that Firefox has decided to remove the ability to let us control our own cookie settings, they were the only browser to allow people to do so, and the only reason I used Firefox. That said, I will take my chances of never updating Firefox ever again if I can prevent this update. If not, I will never use Firefox ever again.
That can be done fairly easily and you are free to do that. However you would be safer using some other up to date browser than an outdated Firefox.
You could take steps to mitigate the risks of damage to your system and data loss by for instance having a well rehearsed bare metal recovery strategy, or running Firefox in a Virtual Machine.
I wonder what the perceived risk and need for cookie control is all about. Firefox still gives you a lot of control over cookies and sites. See for instance
