Firefox file downloads fail

For the last month or so, when I try to download a file in Firefox for Android (usually a PDF or APK) the download fails (if I go menu->tools->downloads...under the file I tried to download it'll say "Failed"...if I long press and select retry, it still fails). I tried specifying a download folder as described in this thread:

but, the problem persists. I tried resetting all of the download related items in about:config and the problem still persisted. I tried setting the download folder to my external SD card and that didn't help either. I can download using the LastPass browser (only other browser I have installed).

I'm using Firefox 42.0.1 on a stock, rooted Samsung Galaxy S4, running Android 5.0.1.

Any suggestions?
