Firefox has begun opening very [very!] slowly, as well as crashing and freezing during use. This is happening on all of my three machines, two running Win 7 and one Win 8. I have tried refreshing and disabling hardware acceleration, but to no avail. Now it seems to freeze on opening and takes a minute or two even to become responsive, if at all. When I look at Task Manager during a freeze I see the Firefox process is using 35-50% of memory [i have 8GB, 12GB and 16GB] and up to 50% of processsor resources. All has been fine until the last couple of weeks. As an adjunct, in the last month I have noticed an almost permanent error message on the status bar - "Sync encountered an error while synchronising: Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action."

A few days in, looks like Sync is/was the culprit. Perhaps evidenced by the "unable to sync" error message? Can't quite understand why - Sync worked extremwly well until a few weeks ago.

Go to the Windows help site, and get the computer to 110 %.

Leave Rapport and sync off until everything is fixed.

I've called the big guys to help you on sync. Good luck.

Normally sync is investigated by detacting, then reattaching the account, however if something has become corrupt then deleting the account and starting over has helped others. (Deleting the account will not delete the locally stored profile data)

However, if there continues to be an issue this is how we get the logs:

  • How do I turn on sync logs:
  1. Open about:config and turn on: services.sync.log.appender.file.logOnSuccess and services.sync.log.logger.engine.bookmarks
  2. Restart Firefox and look at: about:sync-log
  3. Logs and error messages will be located here

Please also use pastebin.mozilla.org for sharring any errors that relate to this issue.

Thank you.

Tontoe I am sorry to hear this. I would be happy to investigate this if you still have the error logs from the instructions above?

Thanks guigs That would be great, as Sync was a very useful feature. What do I need to send you?

Correction: First see if there are error logs. then turn on the feature in about config.

Typically the logs are already saved when there is an error. To see them

  1. Open a new url and paste in this to the url bar:
  2. about:sync-log
  3. The date of when you saw the errors will be logged here.

What might be needed are the error logs on the date and a few success before or after, if there are any after you turn on the logOnSuccess. Pastbin.mozilla.org is a good place to share the log a.nd paste the url here

Couldn't find any error logs.

Have continued without sync but now Firefox has just started freezing for, say, 30-45 seconds on a random basis. This happens on all three machines [two desktops - 1 Win 7 Pro & 1 Win Ultimate 64 bit - and one laptop Win 8 Pro 64 bit.

I realise there is a cost to supporting Firefox, and I've supported Mozilla with donations to make a contribution; would much prefer to use their products because of the ethos.

I don't like Chrome very much but if I want something reliable that isn't going to freeze when I'm in the middle of something important, this is what I have to do now.
