Could you try using the Library dialog, bulk select and delete?

To call up the Library dialog, you can use either:

  • Command+Shift+b
  • "Show All Bookmarks"

On the left side, click Bookmarks Menu. On the right side, if you select a bookmark on the right side, you can delete it using either:

  • Delete key on the keyboard (may be called Del)
  • right-click or Ctrl+click > Delete
  • Organize menu > Delete

The usual methods of selecting multiple items in Finder should apply to the Library dialog as well, in case you want to select a number of items and delete them in one step.

The Library dialog has an Undo item on the Organize menu in case of errors, but that Undo might not go back too far, so please use it promptly if needed!

By the way, if you are trying clean your computer before giving it away, this is not the best method because it leaves some backups that can be restored. How thoroughly to scrub really depends on your requirements.

What did you try?

Did you try to use Shift+Delete to delete the selected bookmark in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)?

Do you have any program or process running that might delete your entire places.sqlite database between Firefox sessions? That file contains a combination of history and bookmarks. If the database file is deleted, Firefox will create a blank one and then import your last bookmark backup into it. That's the only way I can think of that this would happen.

Try hiding your bookmark backups before you shut down and see whether that changes anything. Here's how:

After deleting your bookmarks yet again, open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show in Finder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders.

Scroll down to the bookmarkbackups folder and move everything here to a new location or, if you never want to see the bookmarks again, delete the files.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) Firefox > Quit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then check whether any new backup file was added to bookmarkbackups and remove that, too.

Start Firefox back up again. Are the bookmarks still gone?

Hi franick, please start with the previous step where you "Show in Finder" from the about:support page. If there is a problem with that part of the instructions, please tell me what folders you see in Finder -- since I'm a Windows user and I have to improvise a bit and I'm not always aware of Mac differences.

Do you know whether you lose history or new bookmarks when you exit Firefox and start it up again? In other words, is Firefox just stuck on whatever data it used to start the previous session, or is there something special about not being able to delete bookmarks?

Also, do you recall ever setting up Firefox's Sync service? Sync was designed to share bookmarks and some other settings between different installations of Firefox. It is not a backup service, but could be playing a role if you ever set it up. To check whether you are connected with Sync, you can use the Preferences page:

"3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences > Sync

If you see Create Account or Sign In, then you are not connected to the Sync server and we can ignore this possibility.

just cannot delete bookmarks. And no I never set it up to sync. I have tried everything and still cannot figure it out. I delete it and all bookmarks come back. Is there somewhere there is a folder on my Mac were I can go to to delete all firefox stuff?

Hi franick, the settings folder you opened before when looking for the bookmarkbakups folder, is the place that Firefox is storing all your customized data, settings, extensions, etc. If you want to hide this entire things from Firefox, I suggest trying this way:

Open the settings folder in Finder again and navigate "up" two levels to the Mozilla folder. Here you should see a folder named Firefox.

Leaving that folder open, quit out of Firefox. Then in Finder rename that Firefox folder to Hiddenfox.

When you start Firefox, it should not find that folder and should set up a new installation. Or it will give you a very unhappy error message. If you get an unhappy error message, you can undo the rename and we can try it a different way.

If your bookmarks come back AGAIN in that test, aliens may have landed and taken over our computers. Or at least alien software, because Firefox normally cannot figure out where you have hidden its old files.

Hi franick, what do you mean by "no luck"? You got a completely clean Firefox setup except that somehow your bookmarks also were there? Or you were not able to rename the folder? Or you renamed the folder and Firefox still found the exact same setup?
