After the latest update, I can no longer open tabs in new windows. For some reason they keep on just adding tabs and taying on the same page. Is there someway that I can fix this?

Look at your settings. There is one to set whether to open a tab or a window.

Type into the location bar about:preferences and hit the Enter (Return)Key or the arrow on the end of the location bar.

Where you see the Check (tick) Box

[]Open new Windows in a Tab instead

make sure that it is cleared and not ticked.

If that does not help maybe some extension is interfering so try Firefox's safe mode. See

I can't find settings (in Firefox), only preferences. I'm on a mac... does that matter. When I go into preferences my only options are ... Open new windows in a tab instead, warn when closing multiple tabs, warn when opening new tabs, don't load tabs until selected, and when open a new tab switch to it immediately.

Trying to find settings for Firefox so I can restore open new pages from tabs back to new windows.

Sorry I was using the term settings generically. You have found the settings or preferences I was referring to.

These are the easy options: modify your behaviour slightly. You should already have fairly standard behaviour of Frefox. Most links normally do open on the same page unless you for instance

If you think it is wrong Note: Probably all the links on this page where you write posts open in the same page if you just click them. You would need to explain exactly when you see the problem, with examples if you think it is wrong.

Or Make Changes to Firefox's Advanced Settings There are more advanced settings that are partially hidden and not usually changed. You may wish to explore that if so see /questions/1035103 I will quote one of the posts

There are two common reasons for this problem: (1) Site uses a script that launches the window, and it has parameters such as height and width, or restrictions such as no scroll bars. In these cases, Firefox assumes it is a dialog related to the page and always uses a new window. (There is an override for this I will mention later.) (2) If the page you are viewing is in a dialog window, Firefox may not be willing to open ANY new tabs in that window. Usually in this case the tab bar is missing or the "+" button doesn't work. But if you open a new window using Ctrl+n then links should work normally.

To force even scripted popups into a tab, you can change a setting under the covers.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste link.o and pause while the list is filtered

(3) In this case, check out setting (B) to zero. The others are here for future reference:

(A) browser.link.open_newwindow

3 = divert new window to a new tab (default) (checked*) 2 = allow link to open a new window (unchecked*) 1 = force new window into same tab

* First checkbox in Options > Tabs

(B) browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction - for links in Firefox tabs

0 = apply the setting under (A) to ALL new windows (even script windows) 2 = apply the setting under (A) to normal windows, but NOT to script windows with features (default) 1 = override the setting under (A) and always use new windows

(C) browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external - for links in other programs

-1 = apply the setting under (A) to external links (default) 3 = open external links in a new tab in the last active window 2 = open external links in a new window 1 = open external links in the last active tab replacing the current page

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Not only are these suggestions so totally confusing but it seems that all of the suggested settings are set to opening a new window instead of a tab. This includes About:Config and About:Preferences.

I am still stuck in opening tabs rather than opening in new windows.

Is there still another switch to change? Too bad there doesn't seem to be an option to include a screen shot.

Sorry you are still having problems.

Are you able to give actual examples of what goes wrong. Can you say

  • Exactly what you do,
    • and explain what the result is
    • and what the desired or expected result would be

If you work with links as examples from this forum page we should all understand and be able to check what happens.

You mention problems with about:config & about:preferences again can you explain please.

You have already added a screenshot in a post in this thread. You should have the option to add screenshots to each reply. There is a box: Add images: [Browse...] underneath where you type your reply.

OOPS It was Seanie28 that posted the screenshot.

Emerogork It is probably better if you ask your own question. Please use /questions/new then post back here to let us know you have done that.

After considerable frustration, I guess I finally figured out what the instructions say. What happened to making directions clear? If some style were imparted to the "help" page then I would not have had to intervened with my question.

This instruction as it makes absolutely no sense.

(C) browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external - for links in other programs

-1 = apply the setting under (A) to external links (default) 3 = open external links in a new tab in the last active window 2 = open external links in a new window 1 = open external links in the last active tab replacing the current page

could just as easy have been written:

(C) browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external - for links in other programs

-1 = apply the setting under (A) to external links (default)

3 = open external links in a new tab in the last active window
2 = open external links in a new window
1 = open external links in the last active tab replacing the current page

I cannot imagine how I missed the "Add Images" link below. I guess I am so used to having an icon at the top in the editor.
