Why can I DnD a link from the browser to the desktop, but not to a DnD-enabled app on the desktop? (The app accepts DnD from the desktop)

When dragging a link from Firefox, for example from the address bar or a 'href=url' field , I can successfully create a link on the desktop by dropping it there. I can drag that link from the desktop onto an application icon on the desktop. The application is launched, accepting the link as as a program argument.

I would like to be able to launch the desktop application directly by dragging the link from Firefox to the desktop icon. Can that be done? Is there any other one-step alternative, like an addon?
