Hi, the attached image shows the screen that appears every time I download emails. It overlays all other screens, stays up for about 30 seconds and then goes. I would like someone to tell me how to stop this as it is very annoying.

Thanks Helen

ETA I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird with no success.

Go to View -> Message body as... and select 'Original HTML'

Does that fix it?

more options

Thank you for answering but unfortunately no, it is already set to 'Original HTML'.

I have just set it to plain text and sent myself an email, and set it back to 'original html' and sent a test email. The screen came up both times.

Anything else I can try?

What version of Thunderbird are you using? Do you have any anti-virus software running? Try running without add-ons. Help -> Restart with add-ons disabled.

Try this:

  1. Tools -> Error console (or Ctrl-Shift-J); clear the error log (button near top)
  2. send yourself another email
  3. look at the error log again and tell me what you got

Another thought: View -> Headers -> Normal

I'm using 31.5.0 on Windows 7, AVG free anti-virus.

Headers are set to normal, and I've attached a screen shot of the error console after sending an email in safe mode. I still got the screen of code in safe mode.

Thanks for all your help.

more options
  1. disable AVG
  2. upgrade to TB 31.6.0
  3. reboot your computer
  4. retest
  5. do these next steps if you still have problems

Hi,

The Pastebin id is: kj2yLQrQ.

I'll post more when I've worked through the diagnostics page.

Thanks Helen

Helen, Pastebin said it was already expired, so try it this way (probably simpler anyway):

Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Copy text to clipboard; then in this question in this forum, right click in the Reply box and select paste. All info will be pasted. Then click on 'Post Reply'.

I have now worked through the steps in the diagnostics page and I still get the popup in a new profile. Does this mean that the problem lies outside Thunderbird with my firewall or antivirus?

more options

You said it "appears every time I download emails"; so is it when you click on an Inbox, or when you open an email?

I see you have three accounts. Does happen on all of them, or just one?

go to Options -> Advanced -> General -> Config Editor -> Yes, you will be careful and find 'accessibility.typeaheadfind.flashBar'. Set it to 'default' (which I think is a 1). Close that screen and click OK. Restart TB. FYI: I check my setting: default 1; I checked my wife's Win 8: user set 2; and yours is user set 0. !?!

more options

It comes up once every time I click 'Get Message' and everytime Thunderbird automatically checks. I can not tell if it is all the accounts but it is definitely the main one, waitrose.com. I rarely use the plus.net account and never have used the mozilla news account.

I will go and change the config editor in a moment.

more options

I just set that line to 1 and it did come up default. Still the same screen when I sent a test email.

more options

That was just a 'shot in the dark'; I didn't think it was related.

Just to confirm:

  1. you've run with AVG disabled
  2. you've run with add-ons disabled
  3. do you have any special TB themes set?
  4. do you have any Windows accessibility options set?

I don't see how your firewall could affect it. Beyond this, I think it's time to call in the "big guns" ;)

Your help and persistance has been amazing, thank you.

I've just checked again with AVG disabled and this time the screen didn't appear. I've done it twice because I couldn't believe it the first time and it still didn't appear, so I have a problem somewhere with AVG and Thunderbird.

Do you have any ideas?

Many thanks Helen

That is getting outside my area of expertise. Maybe Matt or one of the others can help.

Best wishes.
