Hi!

You'll need to wait for your device manufacturer to release that update.

Can I not

- build it myself? - use someone elses build? - use a nightly build?

Hi snvpenn,

Like Andrew mentioned, official updates for the device are released by the manufacturer, and unfortunately Mozilla has no control over that.

However, you can build and install builds manually - but please be aware that there is a possibility that this may brick your device.

You can find more information about upgrading, rooting, and making builds for your ZTE Open C device on the following MDN (Mozilla Developer Network) document:

I hope you find this information helpful. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Can anyone confirm if mozilla nightly builds are available for the ZTE Open C, and if not why not?

more options

Hi svnpenn, ZTE Open C sold on Ebay is on its own update channel, you can check the details of each update from the Update Application on the homescreen.

Nightly builds are currently not available for this device, this is because that is how they decided to give updates.

From the manufacturer you can find flashing instructions and the user manual hosted here

Perhaps a better question: for someone wanting a phone with Firefox OS 1.4, what would be the path of least resistance? Examples

- phone has Firefox OS 1.4 pre-installed - phone had Firefox OS 1.3 pre-installed, but has 1.4 or nightly builds available

If something is available like this, then I will just ditch current phone.

Hi svnpenn,

There are currently no commercial Firefox OS devices available with either 1.4 pre-installed or with nightly builds available from the manufacturer. Again, please keep in mind that official updates are released by the manufacturer and not Mozilla.

If you would like to manually install the latest version of Gecko/Gaia on your ZTE Open C device, you can follow the step by step instructions available on MDN (Mozilla Developer Network), but again - be aware that this is only recommended if you are an advanced user:

If you are interested in keeping up with the latest builds from Mozilla, you may look into pre-ordering the Flame device. This is the reference device which Mozilla will use for developing and testing the latest versions of Firefox OS. For more information, you can look into this blog post:

I hope you find this information helpful. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

@Ralph thanks for you comments, however I feel I need to be more specific. You say no Firefox phones available with 1.4 or nightly from the manufacturer.

However are any Firefox phones available with 1.4 or nightly from Mozilla? I do not mind using an "unofficial" build from Mozilla as I would trust that source.

I would prefer not to build myself unless that is my only choice, so much so that I would rather purchase a phone that has a Mozilla build available.

Hi svnpenn,

At this time, there are no commercially available phones with readily available nightly updates directly from Mozilla. Furthermore, Mozilla does not provide nightly updates or builds for the commercially available phones.

I understand that you would technically trust builds from Mozilla, but this is the root of the issue - Mozilla does not "own" the hardware, and does not have the resources to thoroughly test and certify updates for each different hardware device. Only the OEMs have this capability.

There is also the legal aspect of it. There is some proprietary code from the chip manufacturers, contained in the firmware updates. My understanding is that Mozilla cannot legally host full update builds to these commercially available devices.

To answer your other question, are any Firefox phones available with 1.4 or nightly from Mozilla? -

You should look into the Flame reference device. This is a developer-focused phone, and there is work underway - from both a technical and legal standpoint, to be able to provide nightly updates and access to test versions of the operating system.

Another option you have available is Geeksphones. Although they do not have the Firefox OS branding, the operating system is basically the same, and they provide their own builds and support to newer versions of the B2G builds.

I hope this helps alleviate your concerns.

Thanks,

- Ralph
