Can't send emails with attachments using aol, works fine using explorer as browser

I use aol for email. I can receive emails with attachments and send emails without attachments. When I try to send an email with an attachment it goes into perpetual send and I eventually get the error message "We encountered a technical issue, please try again" I can send emails with attachments when using explorer as the browser. My PC is a Dell XPS 430 OS is Vista. Any suggestions?
