New tabs used to disappear after I opened/downloaded an excel or word document, now the new tab remains and I want it to disappear.

Not sure when it started, maybe a week ago, but now a New Tab remains behind when I open an Excel, Word, PDF document from a link in the webpage. The New Tabs used to disappear after the download finished. Any idea how to make them go away again?
