Firefox restore failed: is the Firefox Sync data stored locally too?

I'm syncing FF between two computers. One running FF38.0.5, the other FFDev40.a2. Extremly strange behaviour: FF40 broke down and all session and history data was completely lost. When FF40 restarted the default start-up tab came up, no option to restore the previous session was available. I checked the profile-folder: there was no sessionstore.js or .bak anymore. I accessed the other computer running FF38 to check the "about:sync-tabs" showing the last synced FF40-URLs (which I had left opened before) to restore my tabs from FF40 manually. Unfortunately I found out that the empty FF40 synced already the default-tab to FF38. Thus the "about:sync-tabs" was empty - and now showed that a sync-error happened. Thus I had only one last idea: is FF38 storing locally what is showed in the "about:sync-tabs" from the other FF? If so, the previously synced tab data (or at least most of it) may be available in a historical or backup file... I have lost about 150 url / tabs I researched over the day. Just about an hour before backup time...
