You have to do something about unwanted web sites opening and shouting promotional stuff at us . . . or i will be dropping Firefox after using it for 10 years. And a lot of esoteric instructions won't cut it . . . it just needs a blocking option like Spamfighter in an email program.

Seeam is almost certainly right, it's probably adware and has nothing to do with Firefox itself but is rather foreign, unwanted software that's been installed by a third-party to spew ads at you. Follow his instructions to get rid of it.

While you're at it though you might also try installing AdBlock Plus to help cut down on the ads you're seeing. It won't block pop-ups but it will restrict the ads on the pages that you view.

You might also try opening your Firefox Preferences, navigating to the "Content" tab, and making sure that "Block Pop-Ups" is checked. It'll help cut down on those intrusive windows. If it's already checked that further confirms that it's adware.

In case of malware, there is nothing to deal with Firefox. Because the main reason behind this is when we install softwares, we occasionally install some third party malicious software. They are likely to create this kind of stuff. So here is some fix you can try:

  1. Go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc).
  2. Also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.
  3. Run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner, which are specialised in adware and browser hijackers.
