How do you change the preference of which email address thunderbird uses to send an email when using the 'write' button?

I currently have two email accounts in use on my thunderbird. When sending emails on Mozilla Thunderbird, the immediate preference is to send it from the first account which I added to the programme but for the most part I only want to send emails from the second account. I often forget to change the sender email address at the top of the message window which is becoming an annoyance. I'm sure there must be a way to change the preferences around but for the life of me I can't find it anywhere!

Chosen solution

If you are viewing account 'A' folders and emails and choose to Write a new message, then the FROM will use account 'A' email address.

If you are viewing account 'B' foldres and emails and choose to Write a new message, then the FROM will use account 'B' email address.

If you are viewing Local folders emails and choose to Write a new message, then FROM will use whatever is set as default.

The mail account listed at the top is the default mail account.

You can change which account is set as default.

  • 'Tools' > 'Account Settings'
  • select the mail account you want to set up as default
  • click on 'Account actions'
  • select: 'Set as Default'
  • click on OK to save changes.

The info 'Tools' > 'Account Settings' assumes you have enabled all your toolbars. Otherwise you can also access 'Account settings' via:

  • '3bar menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Account Settings'

or

  • right click on mail account in left Folder Pane and select 'Settings'.

As you only have two mail accounts, it is easy to swap the default and change the order they are displayed. If you later add several mail accounts and need to change the order of those accounts, not just set a default, you can use this addon:

Please note that this addon also allows you to rearrange folders.

How to I change default when I forward email to someone else? It's using wrong one. I can't figure out how to fix that. The correct one is at default when I write. not when I use forward.

thank you

KATHYJB: If you select to Forward an email, it depends on where the email is stored and the TO field email address.

If the email you select to Forward is in folders in Account A: the From in the Forward email should be account A email address.

If the email you select to Forward is in folders in Account B: the From in the Forward email should be account B email address.

If the email you select to Forward is in folders in Local Folders: the From in the Forward should be the email address used in the TO field.

where do I find folders for each account?

I just did a forward test with someone and it came up with correct email. I need to find out where the email is posted wrong in B to make it A.

I had this problem before and maybe I need to go back and find first problem.

thanks KathyB

I think problem solved itself. When I noticed wrong email last time I did forward, I hit address I wanted.

Today I tried doing forward and the correct came up. hopefully, it work every time now

I have a somewhat similar issue. I use a single folder for several email accounts sent mail. If I got to the sent folder and hit reply, the sending email is always my second (and non-default) account, not the default account, nor the one from which it was sent.

Example: 2 accounts: me@foo.com (default) me@bar.com In my sent folder is a mail from me@foo.com to various folks, I hit reply to add to my reply, and the mail sending account is me@bar.com not the expected me@foo.com

gmhyman:

Can you offer more info on your setup. re: I use a single folder for several email accounts sent mail.

Have you set up several POP mail accounts to use a Global Inbox (Local Folders) ? 'Tools' > 'Account Settings' > 'Server Settings' for the mail account click on 'Advanced' button What have you got selected for each of your mail accounts? A: 'Inbox for this server's account'? or B: 'Inbox for different account' and selected 'Global Inbox(Local Folders) or C: 'Inbox for different account' and selected a mail account. If you used 'C' which mail account receives all the mail?

My setup is to have several email accounts, each with their own inbox. All of them use the local "sent" folder for saving copies of outgoing mail, so there's a mix of outgoing mail sent from several accounts in 1 folder. I don't see a seting for "Inbox..." in the Server settings.

On a whim, I deleted all but my primary (work) account and recreated the others (so far 1, more to come), and now I appear to be doing closer to what I want - using the work email when I reply to a sent mail. What I'd really like is for thunderbird to be smart enough to realize the account I sent this from and use that as the "from" when I reply to a mail in my sent folder.

The email in the Local folders Sent folder:

If you want to 're-use' an email you have already sent: right click on email and choose 'Edit as New Message'

I've just done some testing and I'm getting various results, so clearly something is not as expected.

I've discovered that emails that are in their own mail account Sent folder, show correct information if I use any of the following:

  • right click on email and choose 'Edit as New Message'
  • click on Reply or Reply -all reproduces original email copy

Regarding emails in the Local Folder Sent folder: If I use:

  • right click on email and choose 'Edit as New Message'

this works as expected.

If I use Reply : FRom is always the default email address mail account. TO is always the original FROM not what would be required.

I have created a bug report for the 'Sent' folder in Local Folders. Could you vote for this? https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1051589

You can add any comments, but only if they add to the information. Please do not just say 'me too', use the 'Vote' option for this purpose.

Thanks for doing the research and producing a very well written and complete bug. I've added my vote.

Interestingly, when I deleted all my mail accounts except the default, then recreated them, I got what I think is the correct behavior - using the default account.

Thanks so much!
