I am using Mozilla Thunderbird on a Surface 2 pro computer running Windows 8.1 op system. I have been through the file, edit and view menus and cannot find anywhere to make this change. Previous answers to this question refer to much older versions of Thunderbird and are no longer relevant. Your help would be appreciated.

Wrong assumption The older answers are as valid today as ever. It is not as if anything has changed. The vertical and wide views have been around since at least Version 2. What is not valid its the application menu on the toolbar because it is about impossible to find anything in it. Use the Alt+V.

View menu (Alt+V) > layout > vertical view.
