Very simply, I can't get past "checking password" when creating a new IMAP account from an existing account (Gmail). The wizard doesn't seem to work right. Turned off firewalls (just in case). Tried manual configuration still hangs. How do I fix this? What might be causing this?

Try restart the Thnderbird, then open it, you can close thw checking password window, then click on get mail, then it will ask the password now try type the password of that accout.

Also try start Thunderbird in Safe Mode:

This is not about getting email, it is about setting up a new account, using an "existing account". The existing accounts are gmail accounts using IMAP. The auto setup wizard (even when manually configured) gets stuck when you click on the "Done" button and it is stuck with the message (with a spinning circle) "Checking e-mail". Tried doing this in "safe mode" and it didn't help.

The wizard goes through a number of steps, but for gmail is only makes one of them unless the firewall or anti virus is causing a problem. The one step it goes through is "Configuration found in Mozilla ISP database" when the wizard initially drops into the account "settings" dialog. (I think I have attached an image of that)

Anything but that is a connectivity issue. Hence my firewall/Anti virus finger pointing. But unfortunately the number of "security" packages people use these days means there is always something new.

I've disabled all the firewalls and anti-virus stuff. So that wasn't it. That was the first thing I tried when I had the problem

I have no problem setting up for POP. It's IMAP that I can't get. Why does IMAP setup have to go through that wizard. Why can't I just configure it with the known settings and use it? Why is that apparently troublesome process necessary?

I guess I'm stuck with using the POP server. IMAP would have been preferable. Maybe I'll try again later. Maybe someone will come up with a solution that works.,

everything goes through that wizard. POP and IMAP!

it is not hard to manually configure it. You just type in the settings you need.

Really? To set up the POP, I just changed the settings on an old POP e-mail account (under account settings) and Voila. So, I guess I just side-stepped the wizard.
