Spell-check consistently reverts to wrong language

Running Firefox 24 browser within Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS Ver. 6.1 (Build 7601) SP1

Within some UI text input screens, most words are underlined with red waves, but right click does nothing rather than the expected access to a language interface.

I have English U.S., English U.K, and French Language packs installed. I desire to have English U.S. be the default language for spell checking functions unless I explicitly enable another language for that page only at that time.

I have yet to find a definitive page describing exactly how to manage all aspects of languages in Firefox, and would delight if someone would put them all in one place.

Search Mozilla Support on 2013 11 03 at 2127 UTC with "default language spell-check" as the search string reveals several promising titles with earnest well meaning content -- thanks to the contributors -- but having not written serious code in over 30 years, my claim to geekdom is long gone stale...need some hand holding please.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-use-firefox-spell-checker?esab=a&s=default+language+spell-check&r=1&as=s#w_switching-dictionaries offers "To switch to a different installed dictionary, right-click in a multi-line field, select Languages, then select the dictionary you want to use."

In one site where I am editing a document in a pop-up html editor, right click does nothing, so the instructions are moot. So, if there is no other means to adjust these settings, I'm a bit stuck.

I know there must be another interface to edit such things, but do not know how to access it.

This is not work stop critical stuff, but it is certainly an opportunity for distracting annoyance, and has persisted/recurred after fixing for years now.

Websites can disable the spell checker via a spellcheck="off" attribute and current Firefox version hide the check-box to toggle "Check Spelling" in this case. I'm not sure how Firefox decides which dictionary to select, but Firefox can select a dictionary based upon data end by the server.

  • Bug 338427 - Spellchecker should respect @lang
  • Bug 682564 - Dictionary keeps switching to en-US despite being set otherwise

Cor-el, thank you for the suggestion. I'm grateful for your work and contribution, and in this instance, it explains why I have no functionality in the 'right click' failure to open an interface. The more pressing problem though, the one that won't go away and was the stated issue, is that no matter how many times on different sites I go and select English over other languages, is reverts to French at every other site I visit. Surely, it is going to a certain language because it perceives it as the default one to load. Where is the setting that defines the default language for spell check functionality? I want to change it ONCE, not for every single site I visit.

Cor-el, the problem remains unresolved. When Mozilla incorporates a UI to enable the user to choose which language will be loaded in the spell check function by default, and perhaps also a UI to allow user to select to allow or disallow the server to override that choice, the problem will have been properly addressed. Until then, it appears the choice of spellcheck dictionary by default is a function of some unknown. thanks for all your work.

I believe I'm having the same problem, and that is related to the discission in this archived thread:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/965624

My language is set to en-ca, but I have an fr-fr hunspell dictionary installed on my arch linux system. I can confirm, as in that link, that when I use facebook, spellchecker.dictionary gets reset to fr_fr. I can set it back to default, or en_ca, in about:config, but navgating back to facebook will reset the page again.I'm afraid diagnosing facebook is a bit beyond me, their pages are quite complex. If anyone has further suggestions I'd appreciate them. thjank you!
