Check for crashes

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash ID's to help us learn more about your crash.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the address bar (that's where you enter your website URL) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent crash ID's that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your response here.

Thank you for your cooperation!

More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

This appears to be a Firefox bug that was introduced recently. I followed this suggestion and the most recent crash IDs were in 2011. Not helpful. It's annoying to get this message every time I open Firefox.

You can check for problems with preferences and try to rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js files and a possible user.js file to reset all prefs to the default values.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

Hi LinDakini:

You may be running into a new bug discussed in a different thread, which is a problem with Firefox shutting down properly on MacOS if you Quit after first closing all pages. The workaround for now until it's fixed is to have at least one page still displayed when using Quit. If necessary, you can create a new window and then Quit. Hopefully this will be tolerable for now.

Hi karole45:

Your first crash ID seems related to Flash. I'm not sure if that is the most relevant issue for you, or whether your main problem also is the startup problem. If Flash-related crashes are your main issue, or something you want to discuss further, could you start a new question so we can keep that issue separate? You can do that here:

hello, this may also be the current problem in firefox 20 that when you first close all open firefox windows and then close the application afterwards it is mistaken for a crash - the bug should be addressed in a later version of firefox.

as a workaround in the meanwhile you could close firefox (through firefox > quit) while the browser window is still running or try this: enter about:config into the firefox location bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash. double-click it and change its value to false.

Hi RickiD, are you running Firefox 20 on MacOSX? As noted above, there is a bug that causes Firefox to think it crashed if you Quit after closing all pages.

One workaround is to Quit with at least one page open.

Another workaround is to stop Firefox from trying to resume your previous session automatically after a "crash". To do that:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box in that tab, type or paste sessions and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash to toggle its value from true to false.

(4) You can close this tab now.

If you're not on Mac, your issue probably is different. Could you start a new question here?
