How do I get the interactive weather maps to work since the latest FireFox update?.

Weather.com and intellicast.com interactive maps quit working for me with the most recent (2012-June) update(s) to v13. Guess Don't know if this is the right "place" for this question but need help as I'm exasperated with Firefox (after years and years of being a happy user). It shouldn't be this difficult with an update! I have been searching for a solution on Mozilla, and other places and so far have come up with nothing helpful. Suggestions I have found to date are useless and its quite nutty that an update to this browser would cause such a headache! Changing pop-up block had no effect. Checked on my firewall/security. Not it. Reinstalled Java. Not it (I had the latest version installed). It just should not be this much trouble to access my usual sites after a browser update! Note that the interactive maps on both sites work fine on Chrome and IE.

Problem with Video playing in Firefox 13, not playing interactive map in weather.com, and mlb.com/gameday Solution below worked for me.

Disabling the RealPlayer Browser Recorder Plug-In is not adequate to solve this issue.

You must complete *all* of the following steps:

   Launch RealPlayer
Click the RealPlayer icon in the upper left corner of the window and choose Preferences.
Choose Download & Recording from the left hand panel
Uncheck "Enable Web Download & Recording for these installed browsers"
   Click OK and close RealPlayer
   Restart Firefox

In what way do those pages not work?
Are they completely blank or do you miss some content?

Those interactive maps maps look like normal images to me (e.g. no plugins involved), so they should work without problems.

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

If images are missing then check that you aren't blocking images from some domains.

  • Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
  • Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
  • Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions"
  • Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key).

If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "Block Images from..." then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

Make sure that you do not block third-party images, the permissions.default.images pref should be 1.

There are also extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and security software (firewall, anti-virus) that can block images.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Thank so much Cor-el!! It was RealPlayer add-in/extension that was the problem. No, I don't use it and never have and don't know why it was in my add-ins list, or how long its been there BUT its now disabled... After confirming there were no blocks etc (per your email), I took your suggestion of restarting Firefox in SafeMode and the interactive map on weather.com loaded just fine. Looked at my add-in extension list and noted RealPlayer was there (and that there was a "caution" flag on it) and enabled so disabled it. Restarted FireFox and all seems to work just fine now. Then read up on the caution and saw that the FireFox block of RealPlayer appears to have begun with the recent updates which is when these sites stopped working...

You can disable/remove the "RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin" extension in the RealPlayer Preferences.

  • RealPlayer: Tools > Preferences > Download & Recording: "Enable Web Download & Recording for these installed browsers"

Thanks again Cor-el. RealPlayer addin has been disabled (still not sure how it got there - guess it "helpfully" installed itself at some time in the past...).

All seems to be working fine now so I'm once again happy with Firefox. Just wish the update hadn't "broken" things without some heads-up as to how to fix things etc. Here's hoping that future updates don't break things!
