Twitter on Firefox missing functions

more options

Hello, this appears to be a Firefox-exclusive problem as any other browser used will fix the issues listed below. However, when I am using Firefox, the following happens:

  • I am unable to like or retweet anything, and cannot follow any accounts. Attempting to do so resets them if I refresh or click off the tab.
  • Notifications do not go away even when I view them
  • Any tweets I have cannot be deleted
  • Any info on my profile cannot be changed
  • I cannot log out

I've tried multiple ways to fix this, including clearing my cache, running in Safe Mode, and removing my saved login. None of these have worked, unfortunately. I've reached out to Twitter Support, but soon realized I wouldn't hear back about specific problems at all. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a blueish highlighted shield icon at the left end of the location/address bar in case Tracking Protection is blocking content. You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection. You can check in the Web Console what content is blocked.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"

"Clear the Cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> Cached Web Content: Clear

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Thank you for the response. It appears using the bypass cache trick fixes these things, meaning it has something to do with the cache from the looks of it. Unfortunately, this is the most I can do, as clearing the cache for the page automatically logs me out of Twitter. The moment I log back on, the problems return. Is there a way to selectively manage specific cookies/cache on Firefox?

Clearing only the disk cache or bypassing the cache shouldn't log you out. Only clearing cookies for this domain does this, so are you clearing cookies because you wrote that bypassing the cache works ?

Yes, but I had attempted to do this in the past to no avail, as I had mentioned previously. Trying both to clear cookies and cache fails to work.

Hey, I was hoping to possibly receive any other solutions to the issue. Apparently, the entire Twitter site won't load unless I shift-reload, which has started to become tedious. Are there any other solutions to this problem by chance?

There seems to be no fix for this, I did some digging and people have had firefox-twitter problems since 2013. The very common cache and extensions solutions have always never worked for them.

This is annoying. I do NOT like switching to chrome for anything other than schoolwork. I have to switch to a new browser to use twitter at all at this point.

Is there a solution? Or is this something that twitter and firefox need to work out, it seems like such a small issue that nobody really pays attention to it? Is that why it isn't fixed after 7 years?

Will this happen every firefox update?

Hi mcpherson.angus,

I'm not sure about this, but can you try the following workaround to see if it solves your problem? https://mzl.la/3d6Lstz
