Why does the ebay bidding amount box clear itself before I have time to click on 'Submit Bid" loosing me the opportunity to make any bid?

more options

This week when trying to bid for items on ebay immediately - within 2secs - after inputting the amount and before I have time to click on "Submit Bid" the amount box has cleared itself. Then closer the auction gets to the end time - say during the last 30secs - as I try to type in the amount - say 125.00 - the 1 is replaced by the 2; the 2 is replaced by the 5; the 5 is replaced by the .; the . is replaced by the 0 etc.

Can someone please explain what might be going wrong? I am using Mac OS Mojave v10.14.6.

I have not tried to purchase on ebay since May 2019 when it was 'working as you might expect'. Then I was using Mac OS High Sierra Not being able to make the purchases I was after due to this apparent malfunction came as a real shock.

Is the cause likely to be my PC setting in some way; a glitch in Firefox or an ebay issue. I have spoken with ebay but they were not able to give me an immediate answer as to whether or not it is an ebay malfunction. My account with ebay is clean.

I hope someone in the community can point me in the right direction. Thank you.

You have an eBay extension. Could that be the problem?

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Did this help?

While you are in safe mode;

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

I forgot to mention that I have the Kaspersky plug-in for Firefox. Because of the bidding earlier in the week, I turned off 'protection' whilst making my bid attempt today but it made no difference to the behavior.

Many thanks for your suggestion. Next time I look to bid for something on ebay I will give it a try.

Did you try Firefox Safe Mode?

Hello FredMacD,

Yes have been into Safe Mode and made the change as you have suggested. Have revisited ebay but there is nothing I wish to bid on at the moment. The item that I lost went for well below the price I was prepared to go up to. It was a unique package that went for less than 50% of current retail value.

I didn't chase down a solution when I first experienced the problem earlier in the week because I thought that it was a problem on the PC I was using which, now I come to think about it more rationally, was my Win 10 machine. This time I used my Mac which I also used for multiple purchases during late Spring 2019 with no bother at all. I use Firefox as my browser on both and have done so for several years since IE became unstable on my XP PC that I managed to eke life out of until April 2019.

If I have any further ebay issues or behavioral incidents will come back for further advice.

Thank you for your help.

Having followed the advice above given to me by Fred McD and just lost another item on ebay for the same reason - this time on my Win10 PC - does anyone have any further suggestions please?

Is it Firefox or is it likely to be an ebay issue and I should ask them again?

Dear FredMcD,

I trust that I have followed your 'revert to unsolved' instruction correctly.

I have also tried using Microsoft Edge (I never use it normally) to compare. I had no intention of buying the product. I was able to place figures in the bid box until the bidding time expired just as I would have expected.

No, still marked as 'solved.'

Remove History For One Site

Open the History Manager <Control><Shift> H. In the search bar, enter the name of the site. Right-click on one of the listings and select Forget About This Site. This should remove all information, including any settings.

Top of the screen in a green flash a "Solution Undone Successfully" message appeared. Hope this means case reopened.

Tried "Remove from History for one site". However, Control>Shift>H = Nothing happens.

Finding the Library via the menu rather than direct from the leaning book symbol where Library does not appear to be, typing ebay into the Search History box brings forth a zero response.

Am I correct in thinking that the feeling is that I need to clear the history of the ebay site from Firefox on my PC in order to re-boot ebay into 'normal' behaviour?

Dear FredMcD

Following my note of 14/03/20 where 'fiddling' with Firefox not understanding what I was doing or trying to achieve, the default icons, namely Library, Home, Downloads, Sidebars and two from Kaspersky on the search bar line moved to the left side of that bar. I tried to return them to the right but with no luck. However, I have managed to place them in an extension box marked by >> that now appears on the left of the search bar that has lengthened to take up the additional space created. This is on my Mac. Windows remains untouched.

On Sunday, I tried a different ebay bidding box on my Mac. The box used is the one on the ebay item description page rather than the one on the bids page that I normally use. To experiment, I input an amount well before an action close and it was taken OK. Tried again closer to the end but not within the final few seconds. Again functioned as I would expect. I was out bid but never mind. Another similar item, due to close around 1 hr later also went to plan but I didn't bid in the last few seconds. Outbid again. This morning on another similar item, I did wait until the last few seconds using the ebay box on the description page and it worked again. This time I was successful.

It feels as though something has perhaps reset itself either without my interference or, my earlier fiddling in trying to follow or understand your instruction might have cleared something? Firefox has been shut down and restarted as well of course.

Have looked at my profile, as suggested. Only the default exists. I have not done anything other than look. Does this profile work on my Windows PC as well or will it be a different profile created at download? If it is the same, is it reasonable to anticipate that the Windows PC is 'reset' as well?

As I don't understand what the problem was . . .

I guess that we are both in the dark on this one.
