Unlike other Firefox for Android browsers Firefox Preview does not seem to work with LastPass. I get an error that says "LastPass was unable to auto-fill this app".

Hi

That does not sound like an issue with Firefox Preview, but is something that the LastPass support team should be able to help you with.

I can confirm the Firefox Lockwise does work very well with both Firefox for Android and Firefox Preview.

I have tried contacting support at LastPass. I wrote them this:

"I'm using an Android phone, Samsung Galaxy S7. The LastPass app works fine at auto-fill when browsing with Chrome, and fairly well at auto-fill when browsing with "Firefox for Android." (The difference is that Chrome seems to just put in asterisks. If it shows readible text, it's too quick to notice. Firefox for Android will put in full-readable characters for about two seconds, and then switch to asterisks. I'd much prefer my password not being as visible.)

"However, while "Firefox for Android" seems supported by LastPass, I cannot seem to get it to work for "Firefox Preview Nightly" (nor, do I think "Firefox Preview"). "Preview" (aka Fenix) is the newest generation of Firefox for the Android system and is what they are currently developing. I'd like to use Firefox Preview (Nightly) as it is probably twice as fast as Firefox for Android. I asked support on a Firefox forum about LastPass not working, and they said it was a LastPass issue: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1279495

"Thanks."

I assume the problem with readable text in Firefox for Android is also a LastPass thing, but in case it is not, mentioning it here.

Ok, thank you. What version of Android do you have on your device?

Oreo. Android version 8.0.0. And though Wikipedia says the current version is 8.1.0_r73, I think I'm beholden to whatever my carrier wants to release to me.

the lastpass extension for firefox is not yet compatible with firefox preview.

Emmett, I got the same response initially from LastPass support. They thought I was talking about the LastPass extension, had I known it would cause such confusion, I would have been extra clear.

I'm talking about the standalone LastPass app for Android that can autofill in Firefox for Android (fennec) (albeit slowly and it shows your password longer than in Chrome, if Chrome even shows it temporarily). What the standalone LastPass app that you can download from the Play store cannot do, is autofill in Firefox Preview Nightly. It gives the error message of my original post.

LastPass after I explained that it was their standalone app having errors, simply responded:

"If you are using Firefox on mobile, it is no longer supported. Try using some other browser like Chrome or Opera Mini. Firefox for mobiles is out of scope since 2018. Thank you!"

Technically, both Firefox for Android and Firefox Preview (Nightly), are "Firefox on mobile." But one works and the other doesn't. Still, what can I say to that? It looks like they won't do anything.

If you google search the exact string of the error you see this is a problem that the LastPass app has on occasion with autofilling some apps:

https://www.google.com/search?q=%22LastPass+was+unable+to+auto-fill+this+app%22

What's unclear is if the LastPass team does something to make its app work with the secondary app, or does the secondary app do something to make it work with LastPass. Regardless, sounds like LastPass won't do anything, so it sounds like it will either take Firefox Preview Nightly's team or a coincidental change by either team to make it work.

Hi

It is down to Lastpass to decide what they would like to support, but I do recomend that you give Firefox Lockwise a try if you have a Firefox Account. Not only does it help with Firefox on your Android device, but other apps that require a user credentials.

Yeah, the reviews aren't that great: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mozilla.lockbox&hl=en_US . Further, multiple password managers kinda defeats the point... However, I will say this, if you had some kind of pass-through feature with LastPass and Firefox Lockwise, whereby I could keep everything in LastPass but authorize Firefox Lockwise when I log into Firefox Lockwise to one-time carry credentials over... then I would be fine with downloading that app in addition to LastPass.

E.g. I'm on Firefox Preview Nightly and I have both LastPass and Lockwise detecting fields in other apps. I go to gmail in Firefox Preview Nightly. Both give me a notification to put in my password, but I only select Lockwise (as I know LastPass doesn't work). I authenticate Lockwise, it then asks if I want to use an existing password (if it exists) or get from LastPass. I don't have an existing password so I select the only option: Get from LastPass. Lockwise then sends a message to LastPass that Lockwise wants my gmail password. LastPass then asks me to authenticate and I authenticate with LastPass (maybe, optional). LastPass gives the password to Lockwise, then Lockwise has it to autofill in gmail. Lockwise then puts it into the gmail webpage, and Lockwise asks if I want to keep the gmail password, and I say yes or no.

I highly doubt the two apps want to play together so nicely.

Firefox Lockwise seems to autofill successfully even less apps than LastPass (if reviews are true), and keeping all my passwords in both places seems foolish (and hard to maintain). I'd only be willing to install Firefox Lockwise in addition to LastPass If there was a pass-through option, and I doubt there will be. OR, if Firefox Preview Nightly gets containers (per another request), then I'd either deal with installing Firefox Lockwise and putting in a few necessary passwords, or just copying and pasting the slow way. Thanks.
