Need to specify a folder for Thunderbird to store all emails in Windows File Manager, on a different disk i.e. not C:/drive - for security.

The C:/ drive is vulnerable to a systems crash requiring Windows to be re-installed. Windows Live Mail allowed me to specify a folder on another disk/partition, and in the past this has been a huge benefit. I wish to do the same to allow me to move to Thunderbird. I cannot find a means to change the file in Thnderbird, which seems to use Appdata on the C:/drive.

You have not done something correctly. You should not be seeing 'profile name' files in a 'mail account'.

What did you do? Did you attempt to move the entire 'profile name' folder?

If you wanted to move the entire profile name folder:

Your profile was stored here:

  • C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>\

'Profile name' folder was typically called 'xxxxxxxx.default' where the x's are letters and numbers.

You perhaps wanted to move 'profile name' folder to D: drive. In D: drive create a folder called 'TBird' Exit Thunderbird. Move the 'profile name' folder into 'TBird' on D: drive.

Start 'Profile Manager' Create a new profile and click on choose folder and choose the moved 'profile name' folder on D: drive. OK everything and Start Thunderbird

This article explains how to move the location of the mail folders, and includes a link to moving the entire profile:

To SF Howes, Thank you for your response. I think I have moved the folder, and hope that Thunderbird will continue to use the new one. But - there is a usability problem. Beneath the "Inbox" and "Trash" in the left hand column, I see displayed the full contents of the Profile folder as if I were viewing it in File Manager . How may I remove this whole screen full of stuff? i.e. folders, like abook.map addons.json calendar-data cookies.sqlite to list a selection. When this is done, my next task will be to import all my emails from Windows Live Mail. I hope this will work!

If unsure of what you have done. Post some images showing content of D: drive location of thunderbird stored folders and files. So we can see what you have got and where it is to understand what has occurred.

Thank you. You were quite right. I have now corrected the directory and all is working fine....... except that I cannot send emails, but get an error message even though I have double checked that my settings for the outgoing mail server is correct. (But is it?) Can moving the directory have caused this? I cannot see a connection.
