After clearing Firefox cache, I can't access gmail.

Firefox was running very slowly, so I cleared the cache. Now I cannot open gmail. When I try, gmail opens a page that prompts me to set up a new account. Gmail opens fine in Safari & Opera. I do not have any security apps loaded that might create a conflict.

Hi adennichols, clearing only cached files should not affect logging in. However, the "Clear Recent History" dialog -- if you used that one -- also allows clearing Cookies, which definitely would kick you out of any sites you were logged into.

If you try a link to your Gmail Inbox, does Gmail redirect properly to the login page?

I think you have also cleared some required cookies while clearing your cache.

Did you tried login into your Google account again?

Thanks for your replies. I must have inadvertently used the "Clear recent history" dialog box and thus cleared cookies. Other websites (facebook, etc.) all open without a hitch. I checked, and I am still logged in to my Google acct., but when I try to access Gmail, it opens a page that says "Add Gmail to your Google Account." Of course, if I complete the data boxes on this page, it responds that the user name is already taken.

Hi adennichols, do you have multiple Google accounts? You may need to sign in again, possibly after signing out first, to get into the one that uses that email address.

I only have one Google account, as far as I'm aware. Where can I verify this? Should I try signing out and back in if I only have one account (and if so, how do I go about it?)?

If clearing cookies didn't help then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file in the Firefox profile folder that stores the cookies got corrupted.

  • rename/remove cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and when present delete cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.


You can remove all data stored in Firefox for a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox for this domain like history and cookies and passwords and exceptions and cache, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data for that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data for that website will be saved once again.
