So I've been using Firefox for quite a while now, both at home at work and on my phone. I've never had any issues with anything. I've had the same 3 extensions running since the installation of Firefox(Momentum tabs, Popup blocker and uBlock Origin)

But recently, Firefox has been uploading insane amount of data to the point where it just does not make sense. I'm adding two images, 1st shows my trend over the last 4 months while the 2nd shows how much data Firefox has been sending while being on (with a reset) for about 4h.

It became an issue because i usually do not close my computer and leave Firefox open with the tabs open (on average 5) and it was consuming all that data while i was at work While a "fix" could be well, close your Firefox, if this keeps up I'll just switch browser.

As far as what tabs are kept open a few Stock images website, GogoAnime, and usually my e-mails or work where i've left it off. No streaming website is left opened

I've got no active VPN connections, I've got complete control of my network and am beyond 100% certain that the issue comes from firefox, no other IP are on my network and lastly disabling all of my extensions has not changed the behavior of Firefox. My Firefox is up to date, (70.0.1) so everything else on my computer, from windows, gpu to all other drivers

Any help would be appreciated, otherwise i'll just change browser. (tried leaving on Chrome and it hardly uploads anything whatsoever)

There are many Bandwidth Monitors available. Try to find one which logs activity or alerts you to activity occurring above a set amount. Here's a place to start: AlternativeTo https://alternativeto.net/software/bitmeter-os/ _______________________________________________________________

Different malware scan tools scan at different levels on your computer. You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which will work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Safety Scanner https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/ threat-protection/intelligence/safety-scanner-download

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (You said that you have this one) https://www.malwarebytes.com/premium/

Anti-Rootkit Utility - TDSSKiller https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tdsskiller/

MalwareBytes AdwCleaner https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/

ESET Online Scanner https://www.eset.com/us/home/online-scanner/

(Malwarebytes Chameleon - allows installation of Malwarebytes on an infected system https://www.malwarebytes.com/chameleon/)

And, of course, run the scans with Firefox Closed.

There are also extensions available to help protect against malware, such as:

Malwarebytes Browser Guard https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/malwarebytes/

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware ___________________________________________________________________

Also, try running Firefox in it's Safe Mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode to see if the issue goes away. If it does, it's likely caused by an add-on, so you will need to use trial and error to determine the culprit. ___________________________________________________________________

You may need to boot the computer into Windows Safe Mode with networking to see if security software is causing problems.

Hi Skellt, You can find more information by entering about:networking in the address bar and pressing enter.

Alright, assuming i do go to About:Networking. How do i use any of that information

Taking IPs for instance, unless i'm willing to pay to pinpoint exactly what IPs are using bandwidth i won't be able to track em down and even then. The information is not disclosed unless they are big players like Amazon or Google

Same goes with the HTTP site, most of that is IPV data.

Is Firefox the default browser ? Does it make a difference if you make another browser the default browser?

Did you do a malware check ?

more options

Yes Firefox has been my default browser for years If i switch to Chrome, i do not seem to have the issue, with the same tabs open (been trying for 5 days now since I've been able to pinpoint the issue to Firefox)

I have checked my PC with Malware Byte without any malware I have a Bitdefender license active at all time My PC has recently been cleaned with CC cleaner (any installed software were games i had installed from steam, about 1TB of games.. those have been installed for years)

Firefox, at a glance is not showing sings of any "infection" in the sense that i get no redirect, no popup nothing. Im usually pretty self sufficient, but this one got me bummed.

So... simply to make a follow up I've tried everything above, nothing returned any error nor malware. I've done a clean install of Firefox, and it's been a few days where i only upload 20 mb of data a day, which is completely normal.

So what actually solved it, I've got utterly no idea, nor do i know what was causing such immense uploads... i would've loved to find out but alas... as long as i don't upload half of my bandwidth allowed per month, i'm cool with it

Thanks for the help

I'm glad I could help. We all are. I would keep an eye out for it happening again, though. Maybe be able to catch the culprit.

There's a small bandwidth monitor called BitMeter2, which I use, that has a graphical display of your upload/download in real time. You would be able to see that activity easily. (By "small" I mean hardly any footprint) You can get it here: https://codebox.net/pages/bitmeter2

Yeah definitely.. i still have everything installed and running real time so that i can try and pinpoint what caused the issue. i would LOVE to be able to say hey it's THIS extension or THAT website, if i ever do find it, I'll definitely update this thread.

My only means of using Firefox on my computer is via hotspot from my phone and I only allow tethering when they are physically connected with a cord. No WiFi or Blu-tooth. Outside of an hour or two a day, how would I be having this problem?
