Endless new tabs

When I click on a link I get endless new tabs, usually 50 to 100 before I can get Firefox cancelled. I quit using Firefox a month ago but now it's still there. I installed the latest version and it's still there. It happens every day or two. The last time was with https://myaccountrwd.allstate.com/anon/account/login?returnurl=%2Fsecured%2Fdocuments%2Fdocument-center. After restarting Firefox I get

I would like to use Firefox but can't get any work done with it any more. Don't have the problem with Chrome.

You get tabs opening endlessly if you have selected Firefox as the application to handle a file when you get an "Open with" dialog. You should never do this.

Thanks for the response. There was no "Open with" dialog involved. Just a link from one web url to another. Regardless of that, what do you use to open a file? Are you saying that I can download a file with Firefox but then I can't open it with Firefox?

I assume that initially you once did get an 'open with' (download) dialog and that you have chosen to open the link in a Firefox tab instead of opening the file in an external application. Once you do this and also tick the box to do this automatically then you will suffer from tab endlessly opening.

You probably can't revert this via "Options/Preferences -> General -> applications", so you either need to remove handlers.json in the profile folder to reset all action stored in the file or if you know how to edit a JSON file (or know someone else you does) remove this specific key/value pair from the file.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Problem solved. I went back to using Adobe Acrobat to open pdf files. Can't imagine how I ever got suckered into using a browser for that purpose.

Firefox opening multiple new tabs unexpectedly is an erratic behavior often attributed to malware, incorrect settings or general browser problems.
