When I open New Top Site I cannot type or paste an URL in the lower box under URL that will be accepted. No matter what number or letter or symbol I type an x in a black circle shows up and it will not enter on the tab. I cannot paste an URL either. I never had this problem before I reset firefox.

What am I doing wrong?

Chosen solution

Note that the 'x' in the black circle is the button to clear the URL field and start with a fresh URL, so do not get confused.

Hi unkamikee,

Do you have any add-ons or extensions installed? You could try disabling them manually or you could restart Firefox in Safe Mode to see if that fixes the problem.

To restart in Safe Mode :

  1. Click the "3-bar" menu on the top right corner of your browser
  2. Click Help towards the bottom of the list
  3. Click Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  4. Choose Restart in Safe Mode

Is this only an issue with Firefox?

Are you using :

  • CONTROL-C (for copy)
  • CONTROL-V (for paste)

Let me know if this helps.

Hello unkamikee,

Let me see if I get this right : You want to enter a new URL and thus create a new Top Site - you paste the URL and see that "x" in a black circle (which is normal). What happens when you click on the blue "Save" button  ?

When I click the blue "Save" button it goes back to the Top Sites Page with nothing saved, blank just like it was before.

Does this happen regardless of which URL you enter ?

I've got a feeling that I'm missing something in your original post, but I can't put my finger on it .....

There was a related issue that was posted a few months back about a user unable to create new Top Sites which was resolved while creating a copy/backup of a users profile; It might be worth checking into :

Yes the black x appears no matter what I type in, numeral, letter, symbol and nothing happens when I ignore and click "Add" to a properly addressed URL.

The fixes you recommend are beyond my technical abilities. I'm a retired contractor, and retail nurseryman. I just want to read the news and emails.

One should be able to to just copy and paste the URL into the URL box, click "Add" and be done like it used to work before I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox.

One further note that may be of use to tech savvy folks, the search bar no longer remembers any sites where I have previously posted a URL.

Thank you for your input.

To all:

Firefox crashed awhile ago. I shut down the computer and rebooted. I restarted Firefox totally from the popup dialogue box that asked if I wanted to report the crash to Mozilla.

Viola! Everything is working hunky dory, all of my previously saved tabs are back and it's working like it used to. I can now edit the saved tabs from the same window as I was having issues with. I can only guess (as I am computer illiterate) that the original reinstall didn't load properly.

It's hard to be analog in a digital world.

Thank you all for your attempts to help!

Pinned tabs are stored in a pref on the about:config page, so it is possible that there was a problem with the prefs.

  • browser.newtabpage.pinned => websites pinned to a tile
