Server error 550 when sending e-mail

Sending mail failed, server error 550

That could be this message: Server error: 550 R1: HELO should be a FQDN or address literal (See RFC 2821 4.1.1.1) or Server error: 550 relay not permitted, authentication required / Relay not allowed

The most common cause is that authentication is missing in the outgoing mail settings. With outgoing mail, your e-mail address / login and corresponding password are also required. With Outlook you can choose "use the same data as for incoming e-mail." You use your own mail server that sends e-mail via our mail server. This is not a problem, provided that point 1 is met and the correct host name is also used: mail.domeinname.tld You use port 25 for outgoing mail. Use port 587, port 25 is no longer supported by many providers.

Wikipedia may have provided some insight. For 550, instead of the error message I got (relay not permitted), they write "non-existent e-mail address." That is a possibilty, but there's no way I would have thought that was the problem from the error message I got.

I thought we were finished. It's probably a non-existent address and according to Wikipedia, that would cause a 550.

550 error number can mean various non delivery situations which are usually explained by the additional information. In your case the additional information was 'relay not permitted', so this means the email did not get through your outgoing server for some reason. The list below is the most common reasons:

• You're trying to send mail through the smtp mail servers without authentication. eg: FROM email address is using an outgoing server with a different username/email address.
• Your ISP has blocked the port you're sending mail on. Usually relates to users still sending via port 25.
• The domain you're sending mail to doesn't have your outgoing mailservers listed as the primary MX record.
• The DNS records for the domain you're sending mail to has recently been updated. If a domain's DNS cache has not yet updated to reflect recent changes, you may face 550 errors. Waiting will often resolve the matter in this instance.
• There is a forwarder on the receiving end of the e-mail address you are sending to that forwards to another e-mail address that forwards back to the initial e-mail address, creating an infinite loop.

Try this..

Launch your mail client. Under 'Tools' select 'Account Settings'. Scroll down your accounts and select 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)'. Select your outgoing server and click 'Edit'. Enable the 'Use name and password' option.
