THunderbird now very slow since update in May 2019

Since the most recent update, TB is slow to the point of unusable. I scroll through messages and it can take 15seconds for a short message to open. If I delete 5 in quick succession, it can take a minute to delete them and catch up to present the first undeleted message.

I have a mac pro, using gmail imap

At the moment I am going to have to use Gmail directly. Any insights would be much appreciated.

THank you. It was redownloading hte whole imap file, which was being triplicated because of "Important" and "All Mail". I unsynced these and deleted the files from the sub folders as per http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_with_Thunderbird_and_Mozilla_Suite#Subscriptions
